History |
| Established: |
1956 |
| Founded By: |
Friar Alfred Boedekker;
In 1950 when Father Alfred Boeddeker founded St. Anthony Dining Room,
he also realized that many of the guests suffered from untreated medical
problems. In order to address these needs, space in the back of the
Dining Room was set aside to provide medical services.
Beginning in September, 1956, the volunteer physicians and nurses
of St. Joseph's Hospital began to offer services two days a week.
As needs and resources expanded, the services also expanded. This
volunteer arrangement continued until St. Joseph's closed in 1979.
Following his retirement from San Francisco Department of Public Health
in 1977, Dr. Francis J. Curry became the first Medical Director. The
services continued to grow and St. Anthony Free Medical Clinic now
offers general family medicine, a pediatric clinic, podiatry, immunizations,
mental health services, health screening an in-house dispensary, an
on-site lab and many other services.
The clinic evolved into its current state as a result of organizational
collaborations, vision and commitment, and the support of generous
donors, staff and volunteers. St. Anthony Foundation Medical Clinic
carries our the mission of "restoring health hope and human dignity."
